Pilates in the Algarve

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise suitable for all ages & levels of fitness that emphasises core stability, flexibility & strength. RBRC offers Pilates Classes in the Algarve every Tuesday & Thursday from 09.00 – 10.00.

Created over 100 years ago by Joseph Pilates, Pilates has become a widely-accepted form of exercise benefiting everyone from sedentary office workers suffering with back pain to professional tennis players conditioning their bodies between matches.

Resident in Carvoeiro in the Algarve, our Pilates teacher, Alexandra Nascimento has over 15 years experience teaching Pilates in Carvoeiro.

“In Pilates class we work on the following components:

  1. Breathing: making exercises more challenging, effective & safe.
  2. Concentration: fundamental to create a connection between the body & mind.
  3. Control: movements, no matter how simple they are, must be performed with as much concentration & control as possible, ensuring correct muscle recruitment.
  4. Centre (“Power House”): activating the centre is fundamental for the correct alignment of the body & control of the pelvis.
  5. Precision: Repetition of exercises or exercise sequences promotes their precision, increasing body control & awareness of movement.
  6. Fluidity: it is essential that movements & exercises are fluid during their execution.

All of these components can bring several benefits, namely: muscle strengthening, increased body and postural awareness, increased mobility and stress relief.

Even if you are in poor physical condition or have an injury, you can take the class, as the exercise can be adapted according to your condition.”
